Not so shrimpy prawns

There are more than 2,000 species of prawns spread across the world. Some of them are big, and some are very, very small. The Northern prawn—also known as the cold-water prawn—is one of the big ones: it can grow up to 16 centimetres long. Just the perfect juicy mouthful to add to salads and soups. With its characteristic U-shape and its red and white flesh, the Northern prawn looks as tasty as it is.

Norwegian prawns are also nutritious. They contain a lot of protein and are low in calories. Thereby they function as a healthy, yet delicious, mouthful — a marvellous ingredient to flavour any seafood dish.

Living wild

The wild Northern prawn can live as long as 10 years, thriving in the blue, ice cold waters of the Norwegian fjords and coastal areas, as well as in the North Sea and in the Barents Sea. They are also found on both sides of the North Atlantic, around Iceland, Jan Mayen and Greenland and along the east coast of Canada.

Prawns are caught all year round. Some prawn trawlers even cook the prawns on board and sell them as freshly cooked prawns when they have returned to shore. A true Norwegian delicacy fresh off the boat.
